Traditional Wrestling Championships ECOWAS

Eleven countries take part in Dakar from 3 to 5 July, the first edition of traditional wrestling championships of Member States of the Economic Community of the States of West Africa (ECOWAS). According to the head of the Sports division of ECOWAS, Djibril Badji, the aim of these championships is "to strengthen the African integration and development of traditional wrestling in this community area".

Initiative of the Youth, Sport, Peace Fund

From 25 June to 2 July, the first action of the “Youth, Sport, Peace” Fund - created by ANOCA last year - is organized in the refugee camp of Kintelé, which welcome Rwandeses and Burundises. This projet aims to mobilise the youngs living in this camp and it is supported by the CONFEJES and the French Foreign Affaires Office. This initiative for young people from refugee camps will carry on after the Olympic Games of Beijing.

Athletics: Dibaba shatters world 5000m record !

Twice world 10,000m champion Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia smashed the world women's 5000m record when she clocked 14m 11.15s at the Oslo Golden League meeting in the Bislett stadium. Dibaba broke the mark of 14m 16.63s set by her compatriot Meseret Defar at the same stadium on June 15 last year. Diababa said: "I was off the pace after the first 3km, so I pushed. It was my dream to break a high-quality record."

Pistorius wins appeal against Olympic ban

South African paralympian Oscar Pistorius said y that he cried after hearing he had won a landmark appeal to compete against able-bodies athletes for a place in the Beijing Olympics. The 21-year-old, who runs on specially-adapted carbon fibre blades after having his legs amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old, saw a ban imposed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday. The 400m runner had been barred from all competitions involving able-bodied athletes because of claims that the artificial legs he uses give him an unfair advantage. He said the 2012 London Olympics might be a more realistic goal than qualifying for the Beijing Games.

African Judo Championships

The African Judo Championships will take place from 13 to 22 May in Agadir (Morocco). Around 30 countries will take part to the event. All the countries participating will try to get their Olympic tickets to Beijing. These championships offer the last chance to african judokas to qualify for the Olympic Games. The official list of 35 judokas from Africa will go to Beijing will be announced on May 17, the last day of competition.

South Africa won the 16th African Championships in Athletics

South Africa won the 16th African Championships in Athletics which ended Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With 22 medals (12 gold, 2 silver, 8 bronze) won South Africa has come largely at the top of the medals ranking, ahead of Nigeria, which collected 19 medals (7 gold, 7 silver, 5 bronze) , Ethiopia, which won 15 medals, and Kenya, winner of 16 medals (6 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze). These four countries have clearly dominated the championships in which nearly 46 countries took part. In total, only 24 countries have won at least a medal in these African championships.

Athletics African Championships in Addis Ababa

Over 1,200 athletes from 41 African countries are expected to attend the 16th African Athletics Championships organized in Addis Ababa, the ethiopian capital which hosts also the seat of the African Union. The athletes will compete in Addis Ababa from April 30 to May 4 event, which will provide a good chance to warm up for August's Beijing Olympics. The biggest african champions as Fasuba, Bekele or Defar have confirmed their participation. ANOCA President received by the Angolan First Lady

The Angolan first lady, Ana Paula dos Santos Wednesday here receives the president of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, who is on a work visit to the country since last Saturday. According to his work agenda, on the same day, the sports official shall meet with the Commission of Women and Sports, with members of the Organising Committee of the African Cup of Nations (CAN2010), apart from visiting the Angolan Olympic Committee. On Monday, Lassana Palenfo was received by the deputy minister of Youth and Sports, Gonçalves Muandumba, in representation of minister Marcos Barrica, and assessed the functioning of the Federations of Judo, Basketball, Table Tennis Training Centre, Paralympic Committee and the of the Olympic Academy. Lassana Palenfo's visit will end on Wednesday after a visit to the National Radio and to the Public Television of Angola, RNA and TPA, respectively. Last Sunday he watched the soccer match between Petro de Luanda and Interclube (3-0), for the eighth round of the national first division soccer tournament (Girabola2008).

Match between stars of African football for the Children of Africa

Several African football celebrities, including Ivorian Didier Drogba and Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o, will participate on May 13 in Seville (southern Spain) to a charity match to benefit children in Africa, said Monday the Malian attacker of the club Seville, Frédéric Kanouté. Kanouté introduced this match, which will take place at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium, in collaboration with the FC Sevilla and the United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF). "The main objective is to obtain funding to combat child mortality in Africa and to collaborate with Kanouté to develop +children's city in Bamako +," according to a press release of the club Seville.
