A National Olympic Academy in Conakry

On Monday 15, Amadou Camara, the NOC Secretary General of Guinea (NOCSG) announced the building of a National Olympic Academy. It will be entirely funded by the IOC Olympic Solidarity. Its first stone was laid last Saturday inside the September 28 Stadium in Conakry.

Death of Anani Matthia, IOC member

The ANOCA is greatly saddened to learn of the death of Anani Matthia, Honorary IOC member. A pharmacist by profession, Anani Matthia played a key role of promoting football in his home country. He himself was an active player before he became President of the Togolese Football Federation in 1972. In all his activities he always promoted the Olympic values. The ANOCA expresses its deepest sympathy to Anani Matthia’s family.

Maria Mutola, Lamine Diack and Roger Milla will be inducted into the Africa Sports Hall of Fame.

Maria Mutola, the 2000 Olympic and multiple World 800m champion, Lamine Diack, IAAF President and Roger Milla, former footbal player will be inducted into the Africa Sports Hall of Fame on 20 December 2008 in Bamako (Mali).The ceremony at the Redison hotel , will enable Jappo compagny to honour Africans who have dedicated their lives to sports development african on the continent.

Lassana Palenfo is reelected as President African Union of Judo

Lassana Palenfo, ANOCA President, was reelected as the President of the African Judo Union in Hammamet (Tunisia) last week. The new Executive Committee is composed of the following officials : Habib Sissoko (Mali) as Vice-President, André Angwi (Gabon) as Secretary general, Hedi Mhirsi (Tunisia) as Tresaruer general, Nabil Tahar Alem (Libya) as Sport Director, Nagi Meleka (Egypt) as Referee Director and Nasser Ourab (Algeria) as Education Director.

4th African Champhionship of Cycling

The 4th African Champhionship of Cycling, which took place in Casablanca from 7 to 9 November, had been won by South Africa and Namibia. The South african rider Jay Thomson won the race (22km) in 28'10''39''', he was followed by his compatriot Nicolas White. The third place was took by the Namibian Dan Crave. From the women side, the South African Slinjerland Kachandr won the first place in 15'25''97''' (11km). The second place was taken by an another South African girl, Marissa Van der Merwe.

The Peace Marathon

On December 6th, Burundi will be hosting one of the greatest sport events in the history of the country: the Peace Marathon. Initiated by the Presidency of the Republic, this event will promote peace though the values of sport. All burundians are invited to gather and race around values of solidarity, reconciliation and Peace. Many sports personnalities as Haile Gebresselasie will paticipate to this Peace Marathon which is supported by ANOCA.

Death of Ram Ruhee

ANOCA team is greatly saddened to learn of the death of Ram Ruhee, at the age of 81. Ruhee (Mauritius) was an member of the IOC and also a member of ANOCA Executive Committe. He promoted Olympic and sport values for the Maurician youth for many years.

European Gold Ball

Three african football players are nominated for the European Gold Ball : the talented Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon, Barcelona), Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo, Atsenal) and Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast, Chelsy).

2nd Conference of Sport Ministers of the African Union

The 2nd Conference of Sport Ministers of the African Union took place on 10 and 14 October. The ANOCA Vice-President, Mustafa Berraf and the ANOCA president, Lassana Palenfo took part in the Conference. The theme was: « Sport harmonization and coordination for the lasting development in Africa ». During this session, two important resolutions were taken which concern the dissolution of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) and the remit of the All African Games for the ANOCA and Union of Sport African Confederations in collaboration with the African Union.
